I'm completely passionate about Johnny Cash and his music. I've always found his role in music to be completely influential and iconic. His deep, baritone voice epitomised power, innovation and could tell stories better than no other voice could. His music combined numerous genres, and even helped to build others.

With films like Walk the Line following the life of Cash, and often being much more focused on the periods of his life in which he suffered with drug addictions, I thought I'd look at his growth throughout his life. The way, despite being portrayed as an "outlaw," he was constantly attracted to a life of religion, spirituality and improving societal issues. His campaigns for prison reform, Native Americans and raising awareness of substance abuse is what makes me feel he is a paradox, and an icon of being both saint and sinner. For this reason, I want to revisit his life, music and influences to see what made Cash the ultimate paradox of identity.
